Meet Our 2014 Fellow: Emma Jacobs
Emma Jacobs When we heard that Emma Jacobs had flipped a pickup — and continued on her way — in pursuit of a story in remote Canada, we knew she was the right woman for the job. She grew up in Boston and worked the immigration beat at NPR member station WHYY in Philadelphia. She pitched us a story out of Réunion, a French island territory in the Indian Ocean, where a string of shark attacks — and the ensuing culling policies — put tourism advocates and conservationists at odds.

She aired two pieces on All Things Considered and one on Morning Edition. Listen: Part I | Part II | Breaking News Piece | Read her dispatches from NPR's On The Road Tumblr.

2017 Update: Emma is currently reporting from Montreal and Paris.

Eric Dargent

Emma wrapped up her reporting trip in Marseilles, France, where she visited Eric Dargent, 37, who lost part of his leg in a 2011 Réunion shark attack. He was back on a surfboard in three-and-a-half months — before he was even walking. He's since taken up skateboarding to spend time with his son.

Mafate - Reunion

Emma shot this surreal photo on an isolated hike to Cirque de Mafate, a depression in the center of the island formed from a collapsed volcano. There is no road to Mafate. It's accessible only on foot or by helicopter. She says: "We descended about 700 meters in three hours. It's really indescribable. This photo can't capture the scale. The only thing I can try to explain is that the path these two are walking along, on either side, the ground drops off abruptly by hundreds of meters."
