About Above the Fray
Calling all up-and-coming international journalists!
The Above the Fray fellowship, operated jointly with NPR, is designed to give a promising early-career journalist the opportunity to cover important but under-reported stories from a location abroad. One fellow is selected each year based on a winning proposal to report from a region lacking significant mainstream media attention.
Above the Fray supports up-and-coming reporters who are ready to tell global stories from under-reported regions, but who do not have the financial means or professional support to pursue these stories. The fellowship is not about finding the most experienced candidate; it is about cultivating the next generation of international journalists. The fellowship strives to discover journalists at pivotal moments in their careers: those armed with the skills to independently tell character-driven, sound-rich stories that take audiences off the beaten path.
The Above the Fray 2023-2024 fellowship application has now closed. Stay tuned for updates about our selected fellow later this year.
