In Honor of Richard Harris
Richard Harris was a great friend and fierce proponent of this project from the very beginning — instrumental in forging the foundation’s connection with NPR. What started out as a pipe dream, became a reality with his belief in our vision.
Over the course of a storied, Emmy-winning career at ABC, NPR and more, he always took time to mentor those starting out in journalism — including foundation namesake John Alexander, the foundation directors and many other journalists-in-the-making — patiently providing advice, encouragement and introductions. He opened doors for many a young person on the brink of coming into their own as a journalist — exactly what the Above the Fray fellowship seeks to provide to its international reporting fellows.
Here’s to Richard’s lifelong passion for journalism, his generosity of knowledge, his enthusiasm and belief in the next generation — a legacy the foundation aspires to carry on with each fellow.
