Andrés’s Reporter’s Notebook #1: Detour

By Andrés Caballero

Just hours before preparing to head back to the States, instead of taking a cab to the airport, I got on a bus heading toward the border with Central African Republic.

I talked to refugees who had watched their loved ones being butchered by men with machetes in the name of religion. I crossed the border and spoke to the so-called Christian militia also known as the anti-balaka. I knew that reporting from Cameroon – with resources – was one seldom opportunity, so I was hell bent on chasing down every single story I could while I was there.

(I did eventually make it to the airport.) —AC
