Emma’s Reporter’s Notebook #1: In the Mist

Emma shot these surreal photos on an isolated hike to Cirque de Mafate, a depression in the center of the island formed from a collapsed volcano. There is no road to Mafate. It's accessible only on foot or by helicopter.

Emma says: "We descended about 700 meters in three hours. It's really indescribable. This photo can't capture the scale. The only thing I can try to explain is that the path these two are walking along, on either side, the ground drops off abruptly by hundreds of meters."
